Well perhaps not quite doubled….but we were 17 teenagers at our film night last night at St John’s. Kelly and Mike had prepared a wonderful evening for all the UTXers with a movie projected onto a large screen, the large open space of the carpet and bean bags and blankets lined up followed by popcorn and hot chocolate. What a delight!
But where did all the extra teenagers come from? So Tia and her friends from Itchen Abbas Primary School were there. They left Itchen Abbas a year ago and are all now at different secondary schools and so it was a great opportunity to get together.
The movie the group watched was Soul Surfer Soul Surfer movie
based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton who lost her arm while surfing from a shark attack around 2004. The key point made in the movie was that we need to see our suffering in perspective.
We see her visiting Thailand after the Boxing Day tsunami. Seeing the profundity of the people’s suffering through the eyes of her Christian faith (250,000 people died in the tidal wave twice the population of Winchester) turns Bethany round and having thought she had to give up surfing, she wonderful goes on to shine in the US national championships and is now a professional surfer.
