One of the striking features of life in the Itchen Valley is the annual Way of the Cross held in Martyr Worthy each year. We walk from the River End of Church Lane to St Swithun’s acting out scenes from the Passion of Jesus Christ, singing hymns and culminating with the Good Friday service at the church. Many people describe it as ‘very moving’.
The performance is entirely performed by those who live in the Valley (or their Easter guests) and is done largely without rehearsal (although there is a briefing the day before) and lines are read from the scripts – nothing has to be learned. Its simplicity is part of the attraction of the occasion. However some costumes have been built up over the years and we largely dress up for the occasion.
Over the next few days we will be approaching individuals to see if they are willing to take particular parts in this annual traditional pagent, but just so we don’t miss out your talent (or perhaps, if not talent, your enthusiasm), if you would like to be involved please let me know.
